Gravel Driveway Cost: Compare Quotes and Build Your Budget

Two driveway prices can look comparable while covering very different work. Separate the stone, delivery and preparation—or use a clearly defined installed quote—before deciding what you can afford.

How much does a gravel driveway cost?

The cost to install a gravel driveway starts with the work being purchased. Refreshing an existing surface, building a new driveway and repairing recurring washouts require different quantities and preparation. A square-foot price without that scope cannot tell you the finished cost.

Use the planner above for a written installed quote or an itemized supply-and-labor budget. It keeps delivery visible and leaves missing costs unresolved. For individual base and surface quantities, start with the gravel driveway calculator and bring its confirmed order into this budget.

A consistent 100-foot driveway example

This arithmetic example uses a 100 × 10 ft footprint and an illustrative single 4-inch layer. It is not a recommended new-driveway design. Geometric volume is 100 × 10 × 4 ÷ 324 = 12.3457 yd³. An assumed matching density of 1.4 US ton/yd³ and independently selected 10% order uplift give 19.0123 US short tons. Use the actual layer specification and supplier basis instead of adopting those assumptions.

Footprint1,000 sq ft

Hypothetical material price, excludes delivery$50 / US short ton
Stone line$950.62
Hypothetical whole-order delivery$75.00
Known supply subtotal$1,025.62

The Try example button loads these same inputs. A hypothetical all-inclusive quote of $5/sq ft would instead produce $5,000 before entered outside-scope extras; the $950.62 stone line must not be added again. These are calculation demonstrations, not contractor quotes.

Local material prices and delivery basis

A Southern Nursery in Greenville, SC lists #57 gravel and crusher run at $40/ton, before separately described delivery. Confirm units, tax, minimums and suitability. Supplier listing (external source).

The supplier listing is a price reference, not proof that its crusher run meets your driveway design. Ask whether a delivered rate already includes trucking, minimum charges and fuel fees. In the itemized planner, choose delivery included only when the material quote actually includes it. Use the gravel delivery guide to plan access and fee questions.

If a specified dense-graded base is sold by weight, the crusher run order calculator can organize supplier density, order conversion and truck limits. Compare products in the stone and road-base guide before choosing a price.

What changes an installed driveway quote?

  • Dimensions and separate layer depths: 4 to 5 inches adds 25% to that layer; 6 to 7 adds 16.7%. This is arithmetic, not depth advice.
  • Removal and earthwork: identify excavation, unsuitable soil, disposal, imported fill and mobilization.
  • Drainage: record outlets, crossings and approvals. If a subsurface drain is specified, budget it separately with the French drain cost planner.
  • Separation materials: use the actual specification and quantity; the driveway fabric guide explains the questions to ask.
  • Delivery and placement: access, unloading location and spreading are different services.
  • Approval and tax: obtain applicable local requirements and dated written prices.

The road manual distinguishes surfacing aggregate from base material and discusses their different fines and drainage requirements. It does not establish one universal private-driveway assembly. EPA-hosted surface-gravel manual, pp. 39–40 (external source).

DIY, professional installation and other surfaces

DIY comparisons should include rentals, transport, disposal and your time. A low material subtotal does not cover ground preparation or a complete installation. A professional quote should identify finished elevations, products, layer states, compaction requirements and what happens if unsuitable ground is found.

For asphalt, use the asphalt quantity calculator with a matched installation quote. For concrete, use the concrete price and quote planner. Compare the same footprint, base work and drainage scope rather than assumed national square-foot bands.

Recurring potholes and washouts need a diagnosis before more stone. The driveway repair guide helps describe that scope. Road drainage guidance treats water management as part of maintaining the surface. EPA-hosted drainage manual (external source).

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 100 ft gravel driveway cost?

For the stated 100 × 10 ft single-layer arithmetic example, the known supply subtotal is $1,025.62: 19.0123 US tons at a fictional $50/ton plus $75 delivery. It excludes a real construction design and unentered work. A new driveway needs its own layers and quotes.

What is the cost per square foot?

Divide a complete, comparable quote by its measured area. An installed rate is not a labor-only rate; verify its inclusions before adding costs.

Does delivered gravel need another delivery fee?

Only if the quote explicitly excludes an additional service or fee. Select delivery included to avoid adding ordinary trucking twice.

How deep should the driveway be?

Use a specified assembly for soil, loading, drainage and local conditions. This budget calculator does not determine structural depth.

How often must gravel be replaced?

Inspect drainage, shape and displaced material and budget the work actually needed. This page does not assign a universal service life or automatic replacement cycle.

Can I use a material subtotal to judge a contractor?

Use it to ask about scope. It cannot establish overcharging when excavation, access, installation and other obligations are missing.
